Digi-pak Research & Analysis

Digipak research –

A Digipak/ Digi-pak patented method of CD, DVD or BD packaging and is a registered trademark of AGI World Ltd, an Atlas Holdings Company.
Patented is when a document given the exclusive right to make or sell an invention.
A registered trademark is when a firm legally uses a name or symbol to distinguish its goods.

There are different types of digi-pak -

(2 panels 1 tray and tube pocket)

4 Panel Digi Pak 1 tray 1 tube pocket

Digipak style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak)  this is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets. Digi-pak style casing grew poplular in the 2000’s among famous record labelling companies. Such packaging is less resistant to getting scraped than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear quicker than others. Licensed digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommended coating it with the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating, ensuring it a longerlife.

Traditional Jewel Cases -

Digipaks  -

Digipaks typically consist of a folded book type paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or a few plastic trays capable of holding a CDs or DVD held on the inside. Digipaks was one of the first differences to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak type packaging made by any other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub rather than a full plastic tray.

What are the key elements of a digipak?

  • Text-name of band, name of album, track listings, price, bonus material, website, blog, credits: name of record company, songwriters, record producer, musicians, musicians thanks, where/when recorded.
  • Pictorial-picture of band, band logo, record label logo (back), barcode (back), DVD logo (back), CD logo (back), website banner (back), MPTS logo (back).
  • Design-colour and style to fit artists genre, unfolds, cardboard sleeve, adverts, booklet, DVD, shape.

These are just a few examples, not all of them apply to the music industry.

One of the first bands to use digi-paking was Show Of Hands when they release their 1997 Dark Fields album. Back in the day digi-paks were only available for sale in large quantities, However the AGI recently introduced the new product called Digipak i-create for consumer markets. Digipak i-create is a web-supported concept that is aimed at music, photo and creative markets.

Update Six

30/11/11: The First Time filming is officially complete now just editing to be done, Chose Plan B as my magazine advert analysis and completed that, Risk Assessments of production Completed.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

During the production and making of ‘First Time’ we come across a few risk factors but managed to overcome them in a simple manor and by altering some of the plans.

1. One of the scenes that we did took place on an overhead bridge above the A127 one of the busiest roads in Romford, Essex. The plan was for Ms Sarra to tear up a love letter given to her by Tears and then chuck it in the air so that it could be edited into slow motion. However, unfortunately on the evening we filmed it was very windy and that if we would have continued for me to throw the paper, it would have fallen on the main roads and distracted passing drivers. This risk could have resulted in accidents and fatal consequences. Therefore I decided to just have shot the tearing up of the paper and leave the filming of the pieces being thrown away to avoid any of these hazards. Once the paper had been ripped up, I responsibly placed the remains in a bin.

 2. Over the process of filming, most of the college tripods were out for hire, which meant we didn’t        have the use of one for quite some time of our filming. It was risky protecting the camera hand held but I ensured that it was used in a safe environment and the cinematographer was not making any sudden movements and un intentionally the handheld camerawork actually worked very well within the final video edit as we synced jolts in with the beats.

3. Whilst ‘First Time’ was evenly filmed both Interior and Exterior, we always had that risk concern for the weather forecast. The weather conditions could have caused film plans to change or caused cancellation of filming overall. However the only weather interruption we had was the wind in point 1.

4. Inappropriate locations – For tears studio shots we couldn’t manage to find a big enough back drop to cover the cameras footage. Therefore our shots were not as successful as we would have liked them to be but they still worked well in the video and editing could easily sort it out.

Plan B Magazine Analysis

Magazine Advert Analysis

Magazine ads are typically used to promote and distribute a particular consumer product. In this case, I am analysing a magazine ad for the release of an album (Music Industry). I have chosen to look at Plan B’s magazine album advert the defamatory of Strickland Banks.
This advertisement is a picture of an independent male singer/ rapper artist Plan B, to portray this the design has just him as the protagonist, he is trying to sell his image, style, voice, career and so on. The album is very much similar so the theme is kept recurrent.
Just by looking at the imagery we can see that it follows the typical conventions of a magazine advert. The first thing I noticed was the bright red bolded title ‘Plan B’ that is the artist’s name. Secondly I noticed the album title ‘The defamation of Strickland Banks’, its print follows the main title however it is in white to show the difference in meanings. Both titles being against a black background works really well because it is red and white. It entraps the audiences’ attention so that they don’t have to look deeply into finding the artists name and album title. As we can see, the rest of the magazine art is in red and white just not so extravagant, therefore the red black and white theme is consistent which is effective.
Furthermore, a persuasive technique is used to draw the audience into buying the product. For example on this magazine ad it states – ‘The multi-platinum album of the year’. They use its success to promote it. Looking at the smaller print in more depth I can see that all the publications noted that have reviewed and rated the albums qualities four stars out of five. On the cover in the bottom left hand corner is a picture of the digi-pak version, this shares the same colour theme as the poster, linking and associating them with each other. This makes the two items compatible when selling and more recognisable to the public, when the audience see either the magazine ad or the digi-pak they will be able to notice that they are advertising the same product and it makes Plan B a lot more recognisable.

Production/ Editing Process

Learning Editing - Use Of Final Cut Pro
( MAC PC)

Colour Correction -

The narrative of First Time is about a young Female (Ms Sarra) who is in love with young male (Tears Carlio) who happens to be in another relationship with (Girfriend Ashley).

Below are a few screen grabs of Tears and his Girlfriend Ashley throughout the video -

All of the flash back shots are in black and white now to portray the past and whatever is in colour is present (Above). This boldly states the contrast in time and narrative.

Below are a few shots of Ms Sarra and Tears Memories Together before the break up -

R & B Genre Research

R & B Music Genre

R & B originates from the 1980's, the abbreviation of R & B is Rythem and Blues however since it hit maintream in 2000 it is known as Contemporary R & B. This is a music genre that combines elements of hip hop, soul, r &b and funk.

The Conventional Music and Lyrics of R n B Genre - has a polished production style, drum machine- backed rythems and an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel (common in Contemporary R & B) and a smooth, lovely style of vocal arrangement. Electronic beats are becoming influences and an increasing trend the use of hip hop or dance inspired beats are also typical conventions, however the harsh and grit inherent in hip hop is reduced and smoothed out when needed. Contemporary R&B vocalists are often known for their use of melisma. Melisma is the singing of a single syllable of text while moving between several different notes in succession.

Most R & B Artists are African American as this is where it originates from.

R & B Female Artists Include: Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, Alicia Keys, JoJo, Keri Hilson, Mariah Carey, Ciara, Aaliyah, Beyonce, the Fugees.

R & B Male Artists Include: Boyz II Men, Bobby Brown, Jason Derulo, Drake, Jamie Foxx, Frank Ocean, Cee Lo Green, R Kelly.

Typical fashion and styles of R & B Male artists are:

Conventions of R & B Music Videos are that they are about both performance and narrative.

Being Topless or revealing some sort of their bodies - For example in Ushers video 'Let it Burn' he is topless in a bedroom with a female. This is to attract the female audience they are targetting.

Tattoos - Alot of male R n B artists have multiple tattoos on them and they like to flaunt them.

Jewellery - Unlike hip hop/ rap artists who wear alot of heavy chunky chains, bracelets and watches r n b artists liek to keep it subtle and wear a simple ring, watch and earring/s.

Usher Let it Burn Music Video Below:

Typical fashion and styles of R n B Female artists are:

Hair and Makeup - Hair and makeup is always bold and eye capturing, alot of blacks and golds are used to make their eyes look alluring. Red lipstick is often used to represent the dominance and power of females.

Jewellery - The typical role of the sexes has swapped round here because the females are seen wearing alot of heavy chains, massive earrings/ hoops and Lairy accessories.

Minimal Clothing - Women of R n B usuall have their stomachs or some part of their body on show, this is to attract their male audience. They are portraying themselves as objects of desire.

Clothing (Heels) - Use of high heels are shown to exaggerate he seduction of the females legs, however trainers are sometimes worn during choreographed scenes.

Iconography -

R&B videos contain very sexual actions and by using the topless men in the male R&B videos  this connotes a sense of sexuality. The majority of R&B videos these days are filmed in greyscale/sepia tone which adds a sensual tone to the imagery in the video. As said earlier R&B male stars wear some jewellery but not as much as Hip Hop stars do because although they are trying to depict their wealth, a majority of the video will have close ups on their bodies and abs to express the importance of the human bodily attraction.

However, Similar to males in the R&B genre, female artists also convey their sexuality through their clothing which is very minimal as also mentioned earlier. They also place emphasis on their sexuality through their style/ fashion. R&B females are usually portrayed as soft goddess type people in their videos, but nowadays there has been a lot of gender stereotypes being broken in their videos with the females being seen as more powerful than the men, men are inferior the women.

First Time Lyrical Analysis

First Time lyrics

Verse 1:

Boy you, yeh your so hard to read but I adore you,
There’s something in them eyes that makes me want you,
But you’re so hard to read I can’t explore you
Yeh you, yeh you

Verse 2:

Boy you, you didn’t understand that I don’t want this,
Coz one day you’re my man, one day I’m his miss,
Then next thing you know not even one kiss,
I’ve had enough of this

Chorus: x 2

That first time when our eyes met yeh,
It was so damn strong it left me thinking,
Oh now your, your mine different feelings boy,
I’m in love with you, but is this loving true?

Hook:

Look, now I know that it’s hard
But now that we’ve come this far,
Forget about the past,
Let’s move on go-fast,
If it was meant then it would definitely be,
Lets just wait and see,
You know about the lifestyle,
And you know that the life’s wild,
It’s crazy,
I don’t know if I could make you my lady coz,
I don’t wanna hurt my baby,
But you got me thinking maybe,
That we could,
And I don’t think we should,
Coz that’s too much drama,
And I already know about karma,
Even though I got a wife,
I might be at yours by the end of the night,
I guess this is something that we both can’t fight,
I know that its wrong but it feels so right,
Alie?

Chorus: x 1

That first time, when our eyes met yeh,
It was so damn strong it left me thinking,
Oh now your mine, different feelings boy,
I’m in love with you, but is this loving true?

Bridge:

(I can’t sleep…Easily…You and me… We can’t we can’t be…
I can’t sleep…Easily…You and me… We can’t we can’t be…)

I can’t sleep easily,
And I don’t know what to do about us,
You made it hard, you took my heart,
Boy…
Look what you did to us,
Look what you did, look what you did,
Boy…

Myself personally wrote the lyrics. The narrative behind these lyrics relates to young teenage girls who feel trapped in a love triangle or who are going through a young break-up. Quite commonly now days the younger generation is growing up too fast and when it comes to relationships teenagers are fighting and breaking in relationships like elder adults. Most older people wouldn’t be able to understand why young girls find love hard because back in there childhood it would not have been traditional to grow up in the way which teenagers do.

Myself only being 20 can relate to these youngsters and thought by writing this song it would help my targeted audience relate to me and that they are not alone in what they are experiencing. I understand them and want them to use my song as comfort and a guide to help them through their broken hearts. Love doesn’t apply to a particular age group anymore, my song tells this to the wider audience.

The Video Will Be Up and Out Soon!

Update Four

15/10/11: I completed my Mood board – this is a collage of images that describe the emotions and feelings in my song First Time. I also completed my lyrical analysis, which described the meaning and thought that went into and how it comes from within. Finally I completed my Andrew Goodwin theory and chose to analyse the music video Let It Go by the artist Devlin because the shots and transitions used inspire me when making First Time.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (Routledge 1992)

Looks at the analysing of music videos. He identifies 6 key aspects of music videos which us as an audience should look out for. These are -

The relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.) It is important that the audience recognises the the structure of the song e.g the verses, chorus and bridge and of course the voice of the song.

Secondly,The artists voice establishes its trademarks and identification which works well with there star image. Roland Barthes Theory the grain of the voice can relate to this as the artists voice is an expression of its own instrument which makes its own associations.

Thirdly, Mode of address (The way those aspects of a text or utterence are constructed that establish relations between addresser and addressee, as opposed to those which construct representations.Songs can also be seen as stories which makes the music video communicate in two ways, them telling us a story and us listening to it.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals  - There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting. Meanings and effects are constantly shown through videos and get drummed into our vision, this is when the meaning of the song gets completely ignored.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics - (e.g. Stage preformance, in metal video, dance routines for boy/ girl band) and Star Performance. Themes, Fashion, Emotions.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur accross their work (a visual style).

There is frequent reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

There is often intertextual reference to films, tv programmes and other music videos etc…
