First Time Lyrical Analysis

First Time lyrics

Verse 1:

Boy you, yeh your so hard to read but I adore you,
There’s something in them eyes that makes me want you,
But you’re so hard to read I can’t explore you
Yeh you, yeh you

Verse 2:

Boy you, you didn’t understand that I don’t want this,
Coz one day you’re my man, one day I’m his miss,
Then next thing you know not even one kiss,
I’ve had enough of this

Chorus: x 2

That first time when our eyes met yeh,
It was so damn strong it left me thinking,
Oh now your, your mine different feelings boy,
I’m in love with you, but is this loving true?

Hook:

Look, now I know that it’s hard
But now that we’ve come this far,
Forget about the past,
Let’s move on go-fast,
If it was meant then it would definitely be,
Lets just wait and see,
You know about the lifestyle,
And you know that the life’s wild,
It’s crazy,
I don’t know if I could make you my lady coz,
I don’t wanna hurt my baby,
But you got me thinking maybe,
That we could,
And I don’t think we should,
Coz that’s too much drama,
And I already know about karma,
Even though I got a wife,
I might be at yours by the end of the night,
I guess this is something that we both can’t fight,
I know that its wrong but it feels so right,
Alie?

Chorus: x 1

That first time, when our eyes met yeh,
It was so damn strong it left me thinking,
Oh now your mine, different feelings boy,
I’m in love with you, but is this loving true?

Bridge:

(I can’t sleep…Easily…You and me… We can’t we can’t be…
I can’t sleep…Easily…You and me… We can’t we can’t be…)

I can’t sleep easily,
And I don’t know what to do about us,
You made it hard, you took my heart,
Boy…
Look what you did to us,
Look what you did, look what you did,
Boy…

Myself personally wrote the lyrics. The narrative behind these lyrics relates to young teenage girls who feel trapped in a love triangle or who are going through a young break-up. Quite commonly now days the younger generation is growing up too fast and when it comes to relationships teenagers are fighting and breaking in relationships like elder adults. Most older people wouldn’t be able to understand why young girls find love hard because back in there childhood it would not have been traditional to grow up in the way which teenagers do.

Myself only being 20 can relate to these youngsters and thought by writing this song it would help my targeted audience relate to me and that they are not alone in what they are experiencing. I understand them and want them to use my song as comfort and a guide to help them through their broken hearts. Love doesn’t apply to a particular age group anymore, my song tells this to the wider audience.

The Video Will Be Up and Out Soon!

Update Four

15/10/11: I completed my Mood board – this is a collage of images that describe the emotions and feelings in my song First Time. I also completed my lyrical analysis, which described the meaning and thought that went into and how it comes from within. Finally I completed my Andrew Goodwin theory and chose to analyse the music video Let It Go by the artist Devlin because the shots and transitions used inspire me when making First Time.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (Routledge 1992)

Looks at the analysing of music videos. He identifies 6 key aspects of music videos which us as an audience should look out for. These are -

The relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.) It is important that the audience recognises the the structure of the song e.g the verses, chorus and bridge and of course the voice of the song.

Secondly,The artists voice establishes its trademarks and identification which works well with there star image. Roland Barthes Theory the grain of the voice can relate to this as the artists voice is an expression of its own instrument which makes its own associations.

Thirdly, Mode of address (The way those aspects of a text or utterence are constructed that establish relations between addresser and addressee, as opposed to those which construct representations.Songs can also be seen as stories which makes the music video communicate in two ways, them telling us a story and us listening to it.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals  - There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting. Meanings and effects are constantly shown through videos and get drummed into our vision, this is when the meaning of the song gets completely ignored.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics - (e.g. Stage preformance, in metal video, dance routines for boy/ girl band) and Star Performance. Themes, Fashion, Emotions.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur accross their work (a visual style).

There is frequent reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

There is often intertextual reference to films, tv programmes and other music videos etc…

Auteur Theory: Jonus Akerlund

Auteur Theory: Jonus Akerlund

Famous Swedish Film and Music video Director Jonus Akerland was born 10th October 1965. He is well known for his use of stylish music videos that are sometimes used as mock forms of movie trailers and short films.

He directed the video ‘Ray of Light’ by singing sensation Madonna; this won a Grammy for best music video, Short Form, and a record of 7 awards at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards (Video of the Year.)

His first found fame was when he directed for Swedish pop act Roxette.

After that he directed videos for Lady Gaga, Metallica, Christina Aguilera, U2, Blink-182, Pink, Rammstein and Britney Spears.

One of his videos for The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up”, gained huge controversy due to its depiction of drug use, violence and nudity.

Link To The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up as it is an over 18's video and could not be hyperlinked.

One of his extraordinary landmark videos is ‘Telephone’ by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce. I found his directing techniques extremely useful when it comes to my role in my own music video production. His use of setting, lighting, costume, pretty much all of his mise – en scene is very capturing throughout the video.

Just by analysing this shot before pressing play, we can see a remake of the hit movie Thelma and Louis 1991 (click link to view the movies information at the interenet movie database.) In quick form, Thelma and Louise decide to hit the road (Lady Gaga and Beyonce) yet find there adventure turning into a murder scene. (Poisoning people in the cafe.)

The Nudity-
As the video progresses Gaga becomes more revealing, he is not shy to express the human body through the use of nudity.

 The Costumes –
The use of costume is uniquely chosen and it depicts a variety of outstanding representations.
The Criminal
The Wonder Women
The Crime Scene
The Protagonist –
Lady Gaga herself and her dominating personality are brought out in this video in the strangest stylistic ways.

The setting -
The Location is mainly set on a prison campus and at a deserted cafe road side to a highway.

Jonus Interviews:

Jonus did an interview for GQ magazine click the link to check it out, However I would like to note that during the interview they asked the question...

Your videos have always caused controversy, but do you find it is getting harder to shock people?
To shock people is never part of the plan. It's always the plan to touch people and to get a reaction. Every time people are touched by the work we do, I'm always a little shocked that it worked. And happy. I still think especially in America, people are sensitive to a lot of details that we wouldn't even think of. I always thought that in Europe we're a little bit more open-minded and we have a different level of shock in general. The good news is that the format of music videos is very loose right now. You can do a ten minute video or you can split it into 20 teaser spots as we did with [Madonna's] "Celebration". You can do different formats. There's no network rules to mess with your work.I was bored of music videos for a few years [because] you would spent all this hard work on it and nobody saw them! They didn't work! They didn't sell albums! The fun part was in the Nineties, was the brief was always "Break all the rules. Do something that's never been seen before!" It's a little bit more interesting and fun right now - that's probably why music videos are fun.

Youtube Interview Part 1 -

He speaks about his work process, how he got contacts for new jobs, what he does when he socialises and how he is different fromt he typical hollywood directors.

here we get a sneak peak at a few videos jonas has directed and how his use of technique is different from others.
